Christmas and New Year in Cartagena 2026-2027: Group Guide
Updated: September 8, 2026 · CABÚ Viajes, local operator in Cartagena de Indias, RNT 215668.
If your group wants Christmas or New Year in Cartagena, the decision is not a November decision: it is a now decision. The large houses in the city sell out between September and October for the two December weeks, and whatever is left after that is priced accordingly. This guide covers what sells out first, how to get there from the US, and when to move each piece.
The real December calendar in Cartagena
- December 7 — Noche de las Velitas. The whole city fills with candles and paper lanterns. It is the official start of the season and one of the most beautiful nights of the year to be inside the walled city.
- Christmas. Dinner at the villa with a private chef, or a restaurant in the old town; family atmosphere and the city lit up. The good Christmas Eve tables are booked weeks ahead.
- December 31. The walled city is one of the most in-demand places in Colombia to bring in the year: gala dinners, parties in the plazas, rooftops at capacity. All of it by reservation — improvising a December 31 in Cartagena is expensive or it goes badly.
- The January week. The party does not end on the 1st. The first half of January is full season, with beach events such as the Buena Vida Beach Festival (January 8-10, 2027, Punta Canoa).
Why December sells out so early
It is simple arithmetic: the large colonial houses in the historic center and Getsemaní are few, and every group — Colombian, American and Mexican — wants the same two weeks. The rest of the year a group can decide with six to eight weeks of runway; for December 24 and December 31, serious groups lock the house in September or October. The boat and the chef hold a little longer. The house does not.
Getting there from the United States
- Nonstop, year round: Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York JFK and Atlanta. From Miami it is about three hours.
- Nonstop, seasonal: United flies Houston and Washington Dulles roughly December through July — which means December is one of the few months when all six US nonstops are running at once. Schedules change, so confirm on the airline site before you build a plan around it. Full detail in our guide to nonstop flights to Cartagena from the US.
- Entry: US citizens travel to Colombia as tourists without a visa. Current entry requirements are on the State Department country information page for Colombia.
- Book flights before you finalize the group. Holiday fares to Cartagena climb steeply from October, and the December 26 to January 2 window is the tightest of the year. Hold the house with a deposit first; the flights follow.
Holiday pricing, without the runaround
December is the most expensive month of the year in Cartagena. The reference market ranges we publish are the baseline, but between December 20 and January 5 houses and boats quote above those ranges, and availability matters more than negotiation. The rule that does hold: here you pay per unit, not per person — the house, the boat and the van cost the same for eight people as for sixteen, so a big group is still the best defense against holiday pricing.
What to book now and what can wait
- Now (September-October): the house or villa. It is the piece that sells out and the one that determines everything else. With a deposit and a company invoice.
- Soon (October-November): the boat for the island day, and the December 24 or December 31 dinner if you want a restaurant.
- Later (November-December): club tables, the chef for the other nights, transport and the details.
New Year and a bachelor party in the same trip?
Every December we run groups that combine the two: someone in the group is getting married, and the year turns while you are there. It works very well — the city is already in party mode — but it demands booking earlier than everyone else, because you are competing for the same houses as the New Year groups. If that is your case, see the full guides to bachelor parties and bachelorette parties in Cartagena, and the New Year in Cartagena festival guide for 2027.
Before you pay anyone
High season raises the scam rate too: polished websites that ask for 100 percent upfront "to secure the date" and then go quiet. Any serious operator in Cartagena — ourselves included — can be verified for free in about ten minutes: here is how to do it.

Frequently asked questions
When do I need to book for New Year 2026-2027 in Cartagena?
The house, between September and October. After that, availability of large houses in the historic center drops sharply and prices climb. Boat and dinners can usually be closed in October or November.
Are there nonstop flights from the US to Cartagena in December?
Yes. Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York JFK and Atlanta fly nonstop year round, and United runs Houston and Washington Dulles roughly December through July, so December is one of the few months when all six routes are available. Confirm the route on the airline site before locking dates.
How much do prices go up in December?
It depends on the component. Houses and boats quote above the reference ranges we publish for the rest of the year, especially between December 20 and January 5. The exact total is confirmed in a written quote, itemized per unit.
Can we combine a bachelor or bachelorette party with New Year?
Yes, and it is one of the best moments of the year to do it. The condition is booking the house before the other December groups.

Tell us what you need and get it back in 24 hours
You do not need to have it all decided. With these four things we send a real quote, not a brochure:
- Dates (or the month) and how many nights.
- How many people. Here you pay per unit: the house, the boat and the van cost the same for 8 people as for 16, so the headcount moves the per-person price a lot.
- What is non-negotiable for the group: an island day on a private boat, a chef at the house, a club table.
- Where you are flying from, and whether everyone lands the same day.
In under 24 hours you get an itemized breakdown per unit with what is included and what is not, plus the payment schedule: a deposit to hold the house and the balance before the trip, against a company invoice. No agency fee and no commitment — the quote is a draft open to changes, and nothing is reserved until you confirm.
