Where to Stay in Cartagena 2027: Which Neighborhood to Choose
Updated: 22 September 2026 · Written by Marta Fernández, founder of CABÚ Viajes, local operator in Cartagena de Indias (RNT 215668). We place groups in all four zones and contract houses directly with their owners.
In short: Cartagena has four zones worth staying in, and the choice changes the trip more than the hotel does. The Walled City puts you within walking distance of every restaurant and rooftop worth the night. Getsemaní is the same walk, less polished, less expensive. Bocagrande is the high-rise beach strip. Barú and the islands buy privacy and a real beach at the cost of an hour each way.

| Zone | Character | Best for | Typical nightly rate, high end | The trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walled City (Centro Histórico) | Colonial houses, rooftops and restaurants on foot | Bachelorette and bachelor weekends, couples, a first visit | Boutique room from about 250 USD; colonial house from about 600 USD sleeping sixteen | The most expensive zone; night-noise limits apply inside the walls |
| Getsemaní | Murals, bars, younger, still walkable to the walls | Groups who want the same nights for less | Boutique room from about 140 USD; house from about 400 USD | Fewer full-service houses; blocks vary street by street |
| Bocagrande | High-rise urban beach, hotel services | Families with children, longer stays | Room from about 180 USD | Little colonial charm; a city beach with vendors, not a postcard beach |
| Barú and the islands | Beachfront villas, pools, silence | Groups who want privacy and a real beach | Villa from about 900 USD for the house | An hour from the city; every outing has to be planned |
Those are the bands we actually book at, in high season, for the standard a US or Mexican traveler expects. They are per house where the line says house and per room where it says room — the difference is the whole argument below.
The Walled City: what you are paying for
Inside the walls you are paying for the walk. Dinner, the second drink, the rooftop and the front door are all within ten minutes of each other, which means nobody is negotiating cars at one in the morning and the night does not end because transport failed. For a group that is the entire value, and it is why we place almost every celebration weekend here.
The stock is colonial houses and small boutique hotels — thirty rooms is a large hotel inside the walls. A restored house with a courtyard and a plunge pool starts at around 600 USD a night for sixteen people, billed per house. A boutique room starts around 250 USD and climbs quickly for the properties with a pool and a rooftop. We set out the properties we book by name in our guide to luxury hotels in Cartagena, and the economics of taking a whole house in staffed villa rental.
What people get wrong: the walls are not one neighborhood. San Diego is quieter and more residential; the blocks around Plaza Santo Domingo are the loudest in the city on a Friday. If someone in the group is a light sleeper, the street matters more than the star rating.
Getsemaní: the same nights, less money
Getsemaní is ten minutes on foot from the Clock Tower and thirty percent cheaper for comparable space. It is where the bars are younger, the murals are, and where a group of ten can still take a whole house without paying Walled City rates. A boutique room runs from about 140 USD; a house from about 400 USD.
The honest caveat is that it varies block by block. Calle del Espíritu Santo and the streets around Plaza de la Trinidad are excellent. Four streets north the character changes. We will not place a group in Getsemaní without naming the street, and neither should anyone else.
Bocagrande: when the beach on foot is the point
Bocagrande is the high-rise strip: international hotel brands, apartments, a beach you can walk to from the lobby. It is the right answer for a family with small children, for a longer stay where the pool matters more than the nightlife, and for anyone who wants a gym, a concierge desk and a buffet breakfast without thinking about it.
It is the wrong answer for a celebration weekend. From Bocagrande every dinner inside the walls is a fifteen-minute drive each way, and every night ends with taxis. Rooms start around 180 USD; the beach is an urban beach with vendors, not the water people have in mind when they picture Colombia. For that water, see the Rosario Islands.
Barú and the islands: privacy at the cost of an hour
An hour south of the city, Barú and the Rosario archipelago are where the beachfront villas are — private pools, a stretch of sand that belongs to the house, and genuine silence. Villas start around 900 USD a night for the house and rise steeply for the properties with a dock.
The trade-off is real and worth stating plainly: you are an hour from every restaurant in Cartagena. Groups that stay out there and expect to come in for dinner twice end up spending the trip in a van. The version that works is the reverse — stay inside the walls and go to the islands by boat for the day, which is what a private yacht charter is for.
Which zone for which trip
- Bachelorette or bachelor weekend: Walled City, or Getsemaní on budget. Walking home is the difference between a good weekend and a logistics problem.
- Group of ten to thirty: Walled City or Getsemaní, in one colonial house or two next to each other. See house rentals in the historic center.
- Family with young children: Bocagrande, for the beach on foot and the hotel services.
- Couple: a boutique hotel inside the walls, or Barú if the point is to disconnect.
- Wedding weekend: Walled City for the guests, with the celebration wherever the venue is. See the wedding weekend guide.
- Rest and beach, a week or more: Barú or the islands, with transfers arranged in advance rather than improvised.
What it actually costs to stay, by zone
The useful comparison is not per night, it is per person for the stay. A colonial house inside the walls at 600 USD a night for four nights is 2,400 USD. Across sixteen people that is 150 USD each for the entire stay — less than one night in a boutique room. Across six people the same house is 400 USD each, and a hotel becomes the better answer. The crossover sits at roughly ten people: below it, book rooms; above it, take the house.
That arithmetic is why we ask group size before we ask budget. It is also why a group of twelve staying in Bocagrande is almost always paying more for a worse weekend than the same twelve inside the walls.
The mistake travelers from the US and Mexico make most
Booking Bocagrande because the photographs show a beach, then spending the trip driving into the old city for everything they actually came for. Cartagena's beach is not in Cartagena — it is an hour away, at Barú and the Rosario Islands, and it is reached by boat. The city is for the streets, the food and the nights. Choose the zone for the nights and take a boat to the beach.
How we place a group
We ask three things: how many people, how many nights, and whether the group wants to walk home. That settles the zone. Then we contract the house or the rooms directly with the owner or the property — no agency markup on the accommodation — and price the rest as separate lines: a local concierge running the days (included at no extra charge), a private chef per service, a driver and van per day. Each traveler can settle their own share separately, with their own receipt, which for a group of twenty is the difference between a trip and an argument.
If you would rather hand the whole thing over, that is what our travel advisor service is for.

Traveling as a group: a house instead of a hotel
From eight people up, a staffed house usually works better than several hotel rooms. What we arrange:
- Staffed houses in the Old City, with staff and an optional chef
- Staffed villa rental in Cartagena for groups from the US
- Concierge in Cartagena: reservations, private chef and a local concierge

Send these five things and nothing else is needed: the dates or the month, how many nights, how many people, what is non-negotiable for this group, and the city everyone is flying from.
- Within 24 hours on a working day you get two or three houses or boats that actually fit those dates, with what we checked on each one, and an itemised quote: each line priced separately, what is included and what is not, and the payment calendar. No agency fee.
- You choose. Nothing is held or booked until you confirm in writing. If nothing fits, we say so instead of pushing a substitute.
- Deposit against a company invoice — never 100% upfront, never to a personal account — and each traveller can pay her own share and receive her own receipt.

December and the first week of January are quoted on the actual house, in writing, because those two weeks sell out first.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best area to stay in Cartagena?
The Walled City for almost every first visit and every celebration weekend, because everything worth doing at night is within walking distance. Getsemaní for the same nights at a lower price, Bocagrande for a beach on foot with children, and Barú for privacy at the cost of an hour each way.
Is it safe to stay in Getsemaní?
Yes, on the right streets. The blocks around Plaza de la Trinidad and Calle del Espíritu Santo are well lit and busy until late. The character changes a few streets north, so the street matters more than the neighborhood name — ask for it by name before booking.
Should I stay in Bocagrande or the Walled City?
Bocagrande if you want a beach and a pool from the lobby and are traveling with children. The Walled City if the nights matter — from Bocagrande every dinner inside the walls is a drive each way, and the evening depends on taxis.
How much does it cost to stay in Cartagena per night?
At the high end: a boutique room inside the walls from about 250 USD, in Getsemaní from about 140 USD, in Bocagrande from about 180 USD. A colonial house sleeping sixteen starts at around 600 USD per night for the whole house, and a beachfront villa on Barú from about 900 USD.
Is it better to stay on Barú or in the city?
In the city, for almost every trip under a week. Barú is an hour from every restaurant in Cartagena, so groups that stay there and come in for dinner spend the trip in a van. Stay inside the walls and reach the islands by boat for the day.
Is a house cheaper than a hotel in Cartagena?
Above roughly ten people, yes. A house is billed per night and a hotel per room, so a house sleeping sixteen at 600 USD a night works out at 150 USD per person for four nights. Below ten people the same house is more expensive per head than rooms.
