Luxury Hotels in Cartagena: The Three Kinds, and When a Staffed House Beats Them

In short: "luxury hotel" in Cartagena means three quite different things, and which one is right depends less on budget than on how many of you there are. For a couple or a group under about eight, a boutique hotel inside the walls is hard to beat. From about ten people, a staffed house is usually both cheaper and better, because a house is billed per night and a hotel is billed per room. Hotel or staffed house? The arithmetic, not the adjectives
This is the decision that actually changes the trip, and it turns on a single structural fact: a hotel is billed per room and a house is billed per night.
A colonial house inside the walls starts at around 600 USD per night for a house sleeping sixteen. Four nights is 2,400 USD. Across sixteen people that is 150 USD each for the entire stay. Eight rooms in a good hotel for the same four nights is not in the same range — and the hotel cannot give you a rooftop that belongs to your group, or a kitchen a chef can cook in, or a terrace where the night starts.
The corollary is just as true, and we would rather you heard it from us: that same house across six people is 400 USD each. Below about eight people the per-unit model works against you.

What we check before a hotel goes in a quote
We contract hotels directly and we do not take a percentage of what you spend, which means we have no reason to push you up a category. What we actually verify:
- Which rooms, not just which hotel. Inside the walls a street-facing room and a courtyard room in the same hotel are different holidays. We ask for the room numbers.
- Whether the hotel will genuinely hold the rooms together. Eight rooms on four floors in two buildings is not a group booking, and it is often what "we have availability" means.
- Whether the pool is a pool. Many beautiful small hotels inside the walls have a plunge pool for cooling off, not a pool to spend an afternoon at. Worth knowing in this heat.
- Lift or no lift, which matters more than people expect in restored colonial buildings with older guests.
- The noise at one in the morning. Inside the walls that changes street by street, and a hotel cannot move you once you have arrived.
Where to stay, by what you are actually here for
- A couple, three or four nights: a boutique hotel inside the walls. This is what the city does best and the walk home from dinner is half the point.
- A group of eight or more: a staffed house inside the walls or in Getsemaní, with a local host and a chef on two of the nights.
- A wedding party: normally a house for the couple and the immediate family plus a block of hotel rooms for the guests. How the weekend works.
- Family with small children or older relatives: Bocagrande, for the lift, the parking and the space, accepting the drive into the old city.
- Two nights, whatever the group size: the hotel. A house does not earn its logistics in two nights.

Where should you stay in Cartagena — the walled city, Getsemaní or Bocagrande?
The walled city if you want to walk out of the door into the old town and walk home from dinner; it costs the most and vehicles cannot always reach the door. Getsemaní for more space per night and the night at street level, where the specific address matters most. Bocagrande for lifts, parking, beachfront and space, accepting that every evening in the old city needs a driver.
Is a luxury hotel or a private villa better in Cartagena?
It depends on group size, not budget. A hotel is billed per room and a house per night, so from about ten people the house is usually cheaper as well as better: a house sleeping sixteen starts at around 600 USD per night, which is 150 USD per person across sixteen people for four nights. For a couple, or a group of four to six, or a two-night trip, the boutique hotel is the better answer and we will say so.
What does a luxury hotel in Cartagena actually give you?

A Bocagrande tower gives you lifts, parking, beachfront and full facilities, at the cost of being ten to fifteen minutes from the old city.
Do all hotels inside the walled city have a pool?
