The Bay of Cartagena: The Boat Day, the Route and What It Costs

Updated: 21 September 2026 · Written by Marta Fernández, founder of CABÚ Viajes, local operator in Cartagena de Indias (RNT 215668). We charter directly with the owners and captains — no agency fee.

In short: the Bay of Cartagena is the huge natural harbour the city was built to defend, and it is the water you cross on the way to everywhere else. A private full day on it runs 850 to 3,800 USD for the boat, not per person, leaving from a dock about ten minutes from the walled city. The standard day departs at 9am and is back by 5pm, taking in the bay, Tierra Bomba, the Vázquez lagoon on Barú and the Rosario Islands national park, with lunch on the way.

What the bay actually is

A deep, sheltered natural harbour — one of the best on this coast, which is exactly why Spain fortified it for two centuries and why the walls exist at all. It is large enough that crossing it feels like being at sea, and protected enough that it stays calm on days when the open water outside is not. Two narrow entrances connect it to the Caribbean; the forts that guarded them still stand at Bocachica.

For a visitor the practical point is this: the bay is not a destination you go to, it is the water everything else sits on. Tierra Bomba is inside it, twenty minutes from the dock. Barú and the Rosario Islands are beyond it. A boat day in Cartagena is really a bay crossing followed by whatever you chose at the other end.

The bay day and the island day are not the same trip

Most full days do both, and that is the usual answer: out across the bay in the morning, the islands in the middle of the day, back through the bay at the end with the city coming up in front of you. It is the best view of Cartagena there is, and it happens to be free.

The standard full day

  • 9:00 — departure from the dock. Arrive thirty minutes early; boats leave on time because the port clearance is issued for a window.
  • Morning — across the bay, past Tierra Bomba and the fortifications at the mouth.
  • Midday — the Vázquez lagoon on Barú, then on to the large islands inside the Corales del Rosario national park.
  • Lunch — on board or at a beach club, depending on what you booked. Beach clubs charge a minimum spend per person, separate from the charter.
  • Afternoon — swimming and the slow part of the day.
  • 17:00 — back at the dock.

The route moves with the weather and the sea. That is normal and it is written into every quote: if conditions change, the captain changes the plan, and a captain who will not is not one to go out with.

What it costs

ItemHow it is charged
Private charter, full day850–3,800 USD per boat by size: 850–1,500 for a 36–40ft speedboat up to about twelve; 1,500–2,500 for a 45–50ft comfortable for fifteen to twenty; 2,500–3,800 above that
Beach clubA minimum spend per person, separate from the charter
Food and drink on boardQuoted separately, or brought with you

Because the boat is billed per boat, the cost per person falls as the group grows: the same 36–40ft boat is 250 USD each across six people and 125 each across twelve. The charter page has the full breakdown by boat size — and the honest explanation of what a "yacht" means here, because most of the fleet advertised that way is a 36 to 48-foot speedboat.

What we check before a boat goes in a quote

US travel advice for Colombia warns specifically about small tourist boats to the islands, and the warning is fair: the fleet is large and not all of it is compliant. Four things, in writing, every time:

  1. The captain's licence, valid and in his own name.
  2. Passenger liability insurance on the vessel, not just hull cover.
  3. The port clearance (zarpe) for that day, which is refused when the sea is unsafe.
  4. Maximum legal capacity, with your group fitting inside it and the crew counted.

We send all four with the quote. If another operator will not, that answer is the information you needed.

Frequently asked questions

What is there to do in the Bay of Cartagena?

Cross it. The bay is the sheltered natural harbour the city was built to defend, and it holds Tierra Bomba twenty minutes from the dock and the fortifications at the Bocachica entrance. Most boat days use it as the route out to Barú and the Rosario Islands and come back through it at the end, which gives you the best view of the walled city there is.

How much does a private boat day in Cartagena cost?

850 to 3,800 USD for the boat for a full day, by size: 850–1,500 for a 36–40ft speedboat up to about twelve people, 1,500–2,500 for a 45–50ft for fifteen to twenty, and 2,500–3,800 above that. It is billed per boat, not per person. When you rent the boat with us there is no separate park or dock tax; if there is a fee, it is the beach club's and we confirm it beforehand.

What time do boat days start and finish?

The standard full day leaves the dock at 9am and is back by 5pm, about eight hours. Arrive thirty minutes early: boats leave on time because the port clearance is issued for a window. Extending on the day is sometimes possible if the crew's hours allow, and is paid at the dock.

Is the water in the bay good for swimming?

The bay is a working harbour: calmer than the open sea but darker, and it is not where you swim. The swimming happens beyond it, at the Rosario Islands or at Cholón on Barú, which is 35 to 45 minutes out. If someone in the group is uneasy on open water, or the sea outside is rough that day, a day inside the bay is a real alternative rather than a consolation.

Can the route change once we are out?

Yes, and it should. The captain adjusts to the sea and the weather, and that is written into every quote. If the captaincy refuses the port clearance altogether for sea conditions, the day moves rather than going ahead — which is why we put the boat day early in an itinerary and never on the last morning.

Do we need to pay the national park tax?

Only if the day goes into the Corales del Rosario national park, which most full days do. It is charged per person and paid at the marina on the day, and it is not included in a charter price. Be careful with any quote that gives one number without saying what it includes.

Send these five things and nothing else is needed: the dates or the month, how many nights, how many people, what is non-negotiable for this group, and the city everyone is flying from.

  1. Within 24 hours on a working day you get two or three houses or boats that actually fit those dates, with what we checked on each one, and an itemised quote: each line priced separately, what is included and what is not, and the payment calendar. No agency fee.
  2. You choose. Nothing is held or booked until you confirm in writing. If nothing fits, we say so instead of pushing a substitute.
  3. Deposit against a company invoice — never 100% upfront, never to a personal account — and each traveller can pay her own share and receive her own receipt.
  4. One named contact on WhatsApp before, during and after the trip, who answers at eleven at night on the 31st. RNT 215668, verifiable in the public Colombian registry.

December and the first week of January are quoted on the actual house, in writing, because those two weeks sell out first.
