Where to go, store by store (verified August 2026)
- La Serrezuela (San Diego) — the 1893 bullring, restored into the historic centre's luxury mall: Colombian and international labels, jewelry and dining under architecture that justifies the visit by itself. Start here if you have one afternoon.
- St. Dom (Calle de Santo Domingo 33-70) — the reference multi-brand store: Colombian designer fashion, resort wear, jewelry, and a Johanna Ortiz shop-in-shop. Johanna Ortiz is the Colombian designer American visitors ask for by name.
- Agua de León (Plaza de Santo Domingo 3-16) — a concept store of Colombian designers, among them Renata Lozano, Ballen Pellettiere and Mercedes Salazar, with a rum cocktail bar inside the shop. Shopping with a drink in hand.
- Casa Chiqui (Calle de la Universidad 36-127) — Cartagena's cabinet of curiosities: artisan jewelry and objects from Indigenous communities of South America, plus pieces from Morocco and Bali.

Certified Colombian emeralds
Colombia produces the finest emeralds in the world, and Cartagena is where most visitors buy them. The rule is short: a certificate from CDTEC or GIA, an invoice, and a loupe offered before you ask. Stones from the Muzo and Chivor areas carry the deep green the trade values most. Never buy from street sellers. Colombian designer fashion
This is the category most visitors underestimate. Cartagena is home to labels that show in Milan and New York: Silvia Tcherassi, Johanna Ortiz, Agua Bendita — linen and silk resort pieces that are meaningfully cheaper here than at a US department store carrying the same label, and with stock that never reaches those stores. For a wedding weekend or a celebration trip, this is the shopping that actually gets worn.
Craft, chosen properly
- Sombrero vueltiao — check it is genuine caña flecha fiber. The more "vueltas" (fiber turns) the finer and more valuable the hat; fifteen and up is the serious range.
- Wayuu mochila — look for single-thread weave for collector pieces. Double-thread bags are quicker to make and far more common.
The 19% VAT refund
Foreign visitors can reclaim Colombia's 19% sales tax on purchases at formal establishments, processed at the airport on departure. You need the original invoice in your name and the goods with you, and the desk sits before security and moves slowly. On a jewelry purchase this is a significant number — which is exactly why the cash-without-invoice offer is never the cheaper option it pretends to be.
How a shopping day is normally arranged
Eight blocks sounds walkable, and it is, but a good shopping day in Cartagena is a sequence, not a wander: emeralds in the morning while your eye is fresh, the designer stores after lunch when the light is better for fabric, craft last because it is the least tiring.
