Romantic Trip to Cartagena 2027: Honeymoons, Anniversaries and Couple Getaways

Cartagena is one of the few Caribbean destinations where a couple can have city and beach the same day: sleep in a colonial house inside the walls, have dinner on a rooftop over the sea and go sailing in the morning. The decision that changes the trip the most is where to sleep: Historic Center if you want to walk out to dinner, Barú if what you're after is disconnecting.

Which area to choose as a couple

Area Best for Keep in mind
Historic Center First time in Cartagena, boutique hotels in colonial mansions, walkable dinners The priciest area; some streets have nighttime noise
Barú and islands Honeymoon and total disconnection, oceanfront villa with pool An hour from the city; every outing means a transfer
Getsemaní Young couples, bohemian vibe, better prices Noisier at night
Bocagrande Longer stays with beach right outside the hotel High-rise area, no colonial charm

Plans that work well for couples

  • Private sunset sail: two or three hours around the bay with the walled city as the backdrop. The most requested plan for proposals and anniversaries.
  • Private day at Islas del Rosario: clear water, snorkeling and a beach club, no shared boat.
  • Dinner on a rooftop over the wall: booking ahead is a must in dry season.
  • Private Historic Center tour: with a boutique guide, not the standard group circuit.
  • Spa and villa with a private pool: for the rest day in the middle of the trip.

Frequently asked questions about traveling to Cartagena as a couple

Is Cartagena a good honeymoon destination?

Yes, especially if you're after a mix of city and sea in just a few days. In a single trip you can combine lodging in a colonial house inside the walls, a private sail around the bay, a beach day at Islas del Rosario and dinners on rooftops with views. It's not an all-inclusive resort destination: it's a city destination with the sea next door.

How many days are enough for a couple's getaway?

Four days is the best balance: one day in the walled city, one island day, one sunset sail and one day with no agenda. Three days covers the essentials but feels rushed. Five or more only makes sense if you add Barú or a second city.

What's the best time to go to Cartagena as a couple?

December to April is dry season, with calm seas and clear sunsets, which matters if you'll be sailing. May to November brings short afternoon showers, fewer people and lower prices. Booking two months ahead gets you a 10% discount.

Can you plan a proposal or a surprise in Cartagena?

Yes, it's one of our most common requests. We coordinate it with the boat or the restaurant: decoration, photographer, music and the exact moment. What matters is giving advance notice, because the best tables with a view and sunset boats sell out first in dry season.

Historic Center or Barú to sleep?

Historic Center if it's your first time: you walk out to dinner and don't depend on a car. Barú if the goal is to disconnect and you have at least four nights, because every trip into the city is a two-hour round-trip transfer. A formula that works well: sleep in the Center and do the islands as a day trip.

How much does a romantic trip to Cartagena cost?

It depends on the lodging and how many private experiences you include. The private bay sail and the island day are the two costs that weigh the most, and they're booked per boat, not per person. Since we operate direct and don't charge an agency commission, you pay the provider's real rate. We send a proposal with a full price breakdown in under 24 hours.

High-end couples: private boat, chef and proposal, with published figures

For a luxury honeymoon or anniversary, what makes the difference in Cartagena is not the hotel (you already know the good ones) but what is booked separately and charged per unit, the same for two as for twelve:

  • Private boat, full day: 850–1,500 USD per 36–40 ft boat with captain. For two people it is the same rate as for ten, and in return the day at the Rosario Islands or Cholón is yours alone: no shared-launch timetable, no crowded beach. Park fee paid separately, per person, at the marina. In Cartagena "yacht" almost always means a 36–48 ft launch; we explain that in the charter guide.
  • Private chef at the house or on the terrace: charged per service, with the market shop invoiced separately at cost. It is the most discreet way to dine alone on a Saturday without a reservation in the Old Town.
  • Proposal: we set it up on the boat at sunset in the bay, on the rooftop of the house or on a private beach in Barú, with a photographer if you want one. It is quoted as a sum of lines (boat, flowers, photographer, transfer), never as a "romance package" with a mark-up.
  • Trusted driver: private airport transfer and Barú–city runs, with the same driver for the whole trip.

No agency fee: the planning work is its own line and it shows on the quote. If you are travelling as a group of families or friends, the staffed villa from 600 USD/night for 16 changes the equation.
