What a Cartagena bachelorette weekend actually looks like

Three nights is the format that fits. Below is the shape that works, and more importantly why each piece sits where it does.

Night one: arrive and stay close

Land in the afternoon, straight to the villa, decoration already up. Dinner inside the walled city, within walking distance. The first night is not the night to be coordinating cars — everyone has just flown, and the point is for the bride to walk in and find it done.

Day two: the water

On the boat by 9 a.m. This is the timing that decides the day. By late morning the good anchorages fill up and the sea turns choppier. A private boat means you pick the route, the playlist and the hour you come back.

Day three: spa, then the big night

Massages or a pool morning at the villa, a long lunch, then the night everyone will photograph: dinner, rooftop, club with the table already under your name. If the group only has one big night, this is it.

Day four: brunch and out

Late brunch, a walk through Getsemaní for the mural photos, and to the airport. Because the airport is inside the city, 90 minutes of margin is enough.

Choosing the villa: what matters and what does not

For a bridal party the villa is not just accommodation, it is the set. Most of the photos will be taken there, the group gets ready there, and the decorated surprise happens there. Four things decide whether a house works:

• Where the pool sits and when it gets sun. A shaded courtyard pool is lovely at 2 p.m. and useless for photos at 10 a.m. Ask which way the patio faces.
• How many real bedrooms, not how many it sleeps. A house listed for sixteen may be eight beds and eight sofa beds. For a bridal party that difference is the whole trip.
• Air conditioning in every bedroom. Non-negotiable in this climate, and one of the most common complaints about cheaper listings.
• Whether music is allowed and until when. Some houses in the walled city have strict rules with neighbours. Better to know before, not at midnight.

Decoration and the surprise setup

Bringing balloons and banners in a suitcase from home is a losing game: they arrive crushed, they take a checked bag, and somebody has to inflate everything at 1 a.m. instead of sleeping.

What works is bringing the small personal things — sashes, custom shirts, anything printed with the bride's name — and having the bulky items built in Cartagena. We set the house up before the group arrives, so the bride walks into a finished room rather than watching it get assembled.

Dress code, and the door

Clubs and bars in Cartagena close at 3 a.m. The night runs earlier than in the US: dinner at 8, rooftop at 10, club after midnight.

One practical note that catches most groups out: the walled city is uneven cobblestone. Stiletto heels do not survive it. Block heels, platforms or dressy flats do, and the walk between dinner and the club is short enough that nobody needs a car.

In high season, arriving at a good club without a reservation is difficult, and a foreign group not on any list is the first to be turned away at the door. Tables get arranged in advance.

Where the photos happen

• Getsemaní murals and the umbrella street — best light early morning, before the crowds.
• The city walls at sunset, near Café del Mar. The whole group fits along the wall.
• Plaza de Santo Domingo and the bougainvillea balconies of the Centro Histórico.
• On the boat, mid-morning, when the water is still flat and the light is clean.
• The villa pool, which is why the orientation question above matters.

What to pack

• Linen and cotton. It is 28 to 33 °C (82 to 91 °F) all year with high humidity.
• Two swimsuits — one never dries in time — plus a cover-up that works from boat to lunch table.
• Two night outfits for three nights, and shoes you can walk on cobblestone in.
• Waterproof phone pouch for the boat day. Cheapest item on the list, prevents the most expensive problem.
• Water-resistant sunscreen at high factor, plus aloe. Someone always burns on the boat.
• Colombian pesos in cash for tips, the dock departure tax and beach vendors.
• Motion sickness tablets if anyone is prone — the sea is choppier from January to March.
• Nothing flashy. Leave the good jewelry at home.

What goes wrong, and how to avoid it

1. Booking the boat last. Large private boats sell out first. Everything else can be moved; the boat cannot.
2. Leaving the dock at midday. Crowds, rougher water, half the day gone.
3. A villa in Barú for three nights. Beautiful, and you will spend the weekend commuting.
4. Stilettos. Cobblestone wins every time.
