Beach Clubs in Cartagena: The Three Zones, and When a Private Boat Wins

In short: a beach club day in Cartagena is really a boat decision. The clubs sit in three zones at three different distances, and the zone determines the transport, the cost and the kind of day. For a couple or a small group, a beach club day pass is the easy answer. From about eight people a private boat usually wins, because the boat is billed per boat and the club is billed per person.
The three zones, and what the distance costs you

What changes when you are a group
This is the part that catches people out, and it is the same everywhere in the city:
- Most clubs require a minimum spend per person, or a reserved area, for groups above about eight. It is not optional and it is not negotiable on the day.
- In high season they fill days in advance. December, New Year and Easter, the good beds and tables are gone well before you land.
- The day pass and the transport are separate things. A price that sounds low often covers the entry and not the boat, or the other way round.
- For a full group, a private boat is usually cheaper and better. The boat is 850 to 3,800 USD for the boat depending on size — 850–1,500 for a 36–40ft up to about twelve people — so it falls per head as the group grows, while the club charges every person the same. That does not mean skip the club. The usual best answer for a group is both: your own boat for the day, with a stop at a club for lunch and a few hours on a bed. You control the timing and you still get the place.

- Departure from a proper marina. Not from a beach where someone offers you a boat. Every vessel carries the captain's licence, passenger liability insurance, the port clearance for that day, and a legal capacity your group fits inside.
- No agency fee and no percentage of your spend, so there is no reason for us to steer you to a more expensive club.
- One person on the ground if the weather turns or the group wants to come back early.

Is there an entrance fee to the Rosario Islands clubs?
The Rosario Islands sit inside a national park, so there is an entry tax charged per person and paid at the marina on the day. That is separate from the club's own day pass and from the boat. Be careful with any quote that gives one number and does not say which of the three it covers.
Can the day be cancelled by weather?
Yes. If the captaincy refuses the port clearance for sea conditions, the day moves rather than going ahead — that is the mechanism that keeps boats from going out when they should not. It is why we put the beach or island day early in an itinerary and never on the last morning.
