The three day trips a group takes out of Cartagena are genuinely different and worth choosing deliberately:
- Cholón is the party on the water: boats anchored together, music and people. It is what most party groups picture when they think of the boat day.
- Islas del Rosario is clear, calm water, better for swimming and photos, with private beach clubs to stop and eat.
- Barú combines a long beach with road access, and works well when part of the group would rather not spend the whole day sailing.

Rosario Islands or Cholón: how a private island day is actually booked
The marina is ten minutes from the walled city and the day is billed per boat, not per person: 850–1,500 USD for a 36–40 ft boat for up to about twelve, 1,500–2,500 for 45–50 ft for fifteen to twenty, and 2,500–3,800 for a larger vessel or a yacht with crew. The park fee is paid separately, per person, at the marina, and beach clubs usually ask for a minimum spend: those two are the classic same-day surprises.
The difference between the two destinations is atmosphere, not price: Cholón is a party on the water with boats rafted together; the Rosario Islands are calm water and lunch on an island. Before paying for any boat in Cartagena, ask for four documents: the captain’s licence in his name, passenger liability cover, the zarpe for the day you sail, and the legal maximum capacity with crew counted.
