Private Walking Tour of Cartagena's Old City: Why It Starts at 5pm

In short: a private walking tour of the walled city and San Diego with a historian guide, starting at 5pm and running about two and a half to three hours. It is billed per group, not per person, with the guide as its own line in the quote. The 5pm start is not a detail — it is the whole difference between a good walk and a hot one.

Why it starts at five

Cartagena is ten degrees north of the equator and the sun is brutal until late afternoon. A walking tour at eleven in the morning is a test of endurance; the same walk at five is the best two hours of the trip. Three things change at once:

• The heat drops. By five the stone has stopped radiating and the shade in the narrow streets starts to work.
• The light turns. The hour before sunset is when the ochre and the bougainvillea do what the photographs promised, and the walls go gold.
• The city comes out. The plazas fill at dusk — that is when locals use them. A tour at midday shows you an empty stage set; a tour at five shows you the city being lived in.

The walk ends as the lamps come on, which puts you in the old city at exactly the right hour for dinner. That is also why we place it on the first evening: it gives the group its bearings on foot before anyone tries to navigate at midnight.

What the walk actually covers

Two neighbourhoods on foot: the Centro Histórico inside the walls and San Diego, the quieter quarter in its northern corner. The whole thing is walkable — the old city is small enough to cross in twenty minutes — so the pace is set by what you stop at, not by distance.

The history is the point, and it is not a gentle one. Cartagena was one of the principal fortified ports of the Spanish Empire, which means its story runs through indigenous goldwork, the conquest, two centuries of pirate raids and the fortifications built to stop them, the Inquisition's tribunal, and its role as a major port of the transatlantic slave trade — the foundation of the Afro-Caribbean culture that defines the city today. Then independence, the hard century that followed, and the modern city of literature, film and festivals. A good guide tells that whole story, including the parts that are uncomfortable, because a city this beautiful becomes far more interesting once you know what it is built on.

Practical things worth knowing

• Shoes. The streets are uneven stone. This is not the evening for new sandals or heels.
• Water and the heat. Even at five it is humid. Bring water; the guide will stop.
• It is a walk, not a tour bus. Two to three hours on your feet with stops. If someone in the group cannot manage that, say so when you book and the route is adapted.
• Rain. May to November brings short, heavy afternoon showers. They pass in twenty minutes and the walk waits them out under a balcony.
• Language. Guides work in Spanish and English; tell us which you want when you book.
