A Long Weekend in Cartagena: the 72-Hour Plan for a Group

In short: Cartagena is a genuinely good long weekend from the United States because the flight is short and the city is small. Three nights is the right length: one night in the old city, one full day on the water, one recovery morning. Two nights works but costs you the boat day, and the boat day is the one people remember.

Why it works as a weekend at all

Direct flights from Miami, Fort Lauderdale, New York and Mexico City land you in a walled colonial city where everything worth doing at night is inside ten blocks. There is no internal transfer, no second flight, no two-hour drive from an airport. You land Thursday evening and you are at dinner by nine.

That compactness is the whole argument. Most Caribbean long weekends spend half their hours in transit; this one does not, which is why three nights here buys more than four nights somewhere else.

The 72-hour structure that works

Thursday or Friday: arrival and the walls

  • Arrive into the house, not a lobby. If the group is ten or more, a colonial house inside the walls with drinks and food already stocked beats checking twelve people into rooms. The first two hours set the tone of the whole weekend.
  • Sunset on the walls. A table on a rooftop for the first round, before dinner rather than after — the light between six and seven is the reason people photograph this city.
  • Dinner booked. The tables worth having go a month out for a group of twelve. La Vitrola and Celele are the two we book most, for opposite reasons: one is old Cartagena with a live band, the other is the most interesting Caribbean cooking in the country.

Saturday: the water

  • Out early by private boat. Leaving the dock before nine is the difference between an open bay and a queue. The Rosario Islands are an hour out.
  • Cholón if the group wants the party, a quiet island anchorage if it does not. This is the one decision to make honestly in advance — the two versions of the day do not mix.
  • Lunch on board or at a beach club. Seafood, served on the boat or at an allied club, rather than whatever is available wherever you end up.
  • Back by six, which leaves the evening intact.

Sunday: recovery, then out

  • Late brunch at the house, cooked by a private chef. After a boat day, nobody wants to negotiate a restaurant.
  • An hour of shopping before the flight — Colombian resort wear or an emerald with a certificate, both of which are better bought here than at home.

What you lose with only two nights

The boat day. A 48-hour weekend means arriving Friday night and leaving Sunday morning, and the only full day you have gets spent either on the water or in the city — not both. Groups that try to do both end up doing a rushed half-day boat trip, which is the worst version of the trip.

If the calendar only allows two nights, our advice is to skip the boat entirely, keep the city, and come back for the islands another time. A bad boat day is worse than no boat day.

What makes a group weekend expensive, and what does not

The house is not what makes it expensive. A colonial house inside the walls starts at around 600 USD a night for sixteen people — 150 USD each across three nights, less than a single hotel room for one night. What costs money is the boat, the chef and the transport, and each of those is a separate line you can take or leave. Each traveller can settle their own share separately with their own receipt, which for a group of twelve matters more than any discount.

What a local operator actually removes

  • Transport as one problem instead of five. Private vans for every group movement rather than assembling taxis at midnight.
  • Reservations that exist. Restaurant tables, beach clubs and boats booked in advance at the price on the menu.
  • A local host on the ground who can be called at eleven at night when something changes.
