Cartagena vs Cancún for a Bachelor Party in 2027: Flights, Boat Day and What 12 People Really Pay
Updated: 20 September 2026 · CABÚ Viajes, local operator in Cartagena de Indias (National Tourism Register, RNT 215668). We run bachelor and bachelorette trips for groups flying in from the United States. We do not operate in Cancún, and this page says plainly where Cancún wins, because it wins more often than an operator in Cartagena would like.
In short: Cancún is the default for a reason. Nonstop flights from almost every US city, an all-inclusive where the bar is part of the room rate, a catamaran to Isla Mujeres and Coco Bongo at the end: for a group of six to eight on a long weekend it is hard to beat, and the flights alone can decide it. Cartagena is the other answer for a different group: ten or more people, four nights, one private colonial house for everyone instead of a resort corridor, a private boat that leaves from the city, and a night that happens on foot inside a walled city rather than by taxi along a hotel zone. Both need a passport. The real differences are how the bill is built, how many nonstop cities each has, and whether the group wants a resort or a city.
Cartagena vs Cancún, side by side
| Cancún / Riviera Maya | Cartagena | |
| Passport | Needed. No visa | Needed. No visa; Check-Mig no longer mandatory |
| Nonstop flights from the US | Almost every major hub, 2–4 h, several carriers; East Coast round trips often 220–450 USD | Miami (American, 5 a week) and Fort Lauderdale (JetBlue, daily) year round; JFK in winter; Houston, Washington Dulles and Orlando from December 2026 |
| Where the group sleeps | All-inclusive resort in the Hotel Zone, about 300–600 USD a room a night for two, food and house drinks included | One colonial house inside the walls or in Getsemaní for the whole group; example 600 USD a night for 16 |
| Boat day | Isla Mujeres. Shared Hotel Zone catamaran 60–80 USD a head on an 80-person boat; private 6-hour catamaran for up to 15 about 1,850 USD (≈185 a head for ten) | Private boat from the city marina to Cholón or the Rosario Islands, full day, 850–3,800 USD per boat by size; ten minutes from the house |
| Nightlife | Coco Bongo, Mandala, The City: big-format clubs on one strip of the Hotel Zone, taxis from the resort | Walled city and Getsemaní on foot: rooftops, Alquímico (World's 50 Best Bars), clubs on Calle del Arsenal. Everything closes at 3am |
| How the trip is billed | Per person: rooms per pair, catamaran per seat, club tickets per head | Per unit: house, boat and van cost the same for 8 as for 16 |
| Sweet spot | 4–8 people, two or three nights, cheapest possible flight, nobody wants to plan | 10–20 people, four nights, one house and a private boat, a city to walk |
What twelve people, four nights actually costs
Cancún's all-inclusive model is honest about one thing: the room rate already includes breakfast, dinner and the house bar. At 300–600 USD a room a night for two, four nights come to 600–1,200 USD per person for the resort alone, before the boat day (60–185 USD a head), the club nights and the flight. It is a per-person model, so the number does not move much whether the group is eight or sixteen.
Cartagena's three published scenarios come out at about 690, 1,025 and 1,240 USD per person for the whole trip except flights and alcohol: the house, a full day on a private boat, dinners, a local host and transport. That is 230–310 USD per person per night, and the number falls as the group grows, because the house at 600 USD a night, the boat and the van cost the same whether ten or sixteen use them. The full breakdown, component by component, and the calculator that returns the number for your exact headcount.
| Group size | Cancún (per-person model) | Cartagena (per-unit model) |
| 4–6 | Wins. Cheap flights and an all-inclusive do the whole job | Expensive per head: the house and the boat are split few ways |
| 8–10 | Roughly even on the ground; flights still favour Cancún for most of the country | Roughly even, with a private house and a private boat instead of a resort and a shared catamaran |
| 12–20 | Flat per head; the resort gets louder, not cheaper | Falling per head, with everything private |
The flight is the part Cancún wins outright. From Florida and the Northeast the two are close; from the Midwest and the West, Cancún is nonstop and Cartagena is a connection until United's Houston and Dulles routes open in December 2026. Every Cartagena route, verified.
Where Cancún wins
- Flights from anywhere, cheaply. This is the biggest single advantage and it is not close. Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Atlanta, Charlotte, Phoenix: nonstop, often on three carriers.
- Nothing to plan. The all-inclusive covers meals and the bar; the catamaran and the club are sold at the lobby desk. For a group that wants zero decisions, that is the product.
- Small groups and short weekends. Four to eight people, two or three nights, Friday to Sunday: the short flight and the resort make it work.
- Big-format clubs. Coco Bongo is a show, not a bar. If the group wants that scale of night, Cartagena does not have it.
- Familiarity. Half the group has been. Some groups want exactly that.
Where Cartagena wins
- One house for everyone. A colonial house inside the walls with a pool and a rooftop, not twelve people across six resort rooms. It is the thing groups remember, and it is where the per-unit model starts paying.
- The boat leaves from the city and is yours all day. Ten minutes from the house to the marina, the whole boat for the group, Cholón or the Rosario Islands, a beach club stop, back by sunset. In Cancún the shared catamaran carries eighty strangers and the private one is a six-hour slot.
- A night on foot. Rooftop, dinner, bar and club within the walls or in Getsemaní, no taxis, no one separated along a hotel zone.
- It is not the trip half the group has already done. That is not a small thing for a bachelor party.
- The bill falls as the group grows, and every scenario is published in writing before you commit. Cancún's resort rate is per person and stays there.

Frequently asked questions
Is Cartagena or Cancún better for a bachelor party?
Cancún for groups of six to eight on a short weekend who want an all-inclusive, the cheapest flight and a big-format club. Cartagena for groups of ten or more with four nights who want one private house, a private boat that leaves from the city and a walkable colonial night. Both need a passport; neither needs a visa.
Is Cartagena cheaper than Cancún for a bachelor party?
On the ground, for ten or more, usually yes: Cancún's all-inclusive runs about 300–600 USD a room a night for two, so 600–1,200 USD a person for four nights before the boat and the nights out, and it bills per person. Cartagena's published scenarios run 690–1,240 USD a person for the whole trip except flights and alcohol, and fall as the group grows. Add flights and Cancún often wins for small groups or anyone outside Florida and the Northeast.
Which has the better boat day?
Cartagena, for a group that wants the boat to itself: it leaves from the city marina ten minutes from the house and is yours all day. Cancún's Isla Mujeres catamarans are excellent but the shared ones carry around eighty people at 60–80 USD a head, and a private six-hour catamaran for up to fifteen runs about 1,850 USD.
Which US cities fly nonstop to Cartagena?
Miami with American, five a week, and Fort Lauderdale with JetBlue, daily, year round. New York JFK is a winter route. United opens Houston and Washington Dulles on 17 December 2026 and Frontier opens Orlando on 19 December 2026. Cancún flies nonstop from almost every major US hub.
How many nights do you need in each?
Cancún works as a two- or three-night weekend because the flight is short and the resort removes the logistics. Cartagena needs four nights: three is tight and two leaves no room for the island day.
Do you need a passport for Cancún or Cartagena?
Yes for both; neither needs a visa for US citizens. If anyone in the group has no passport, the only Caribbean option that works is Puerto Rico.

The five pages that answer the rest
All of it is open on the site, with no form in the way:
- The number, now: the budget calculator — people, nights and level, and it returns the per-person price with the breakdown.
- Which house and which boat fit a group of 6, 12 or 18: by group size.
- Which day each thing goes on: the 3, 4 and 5-night itinerary, with the five mistakes groups repeat most.
- If someone offers you a fixed package: what it must include before you can compare it.
- How to pay without risking the deposit: deposit, invoice and what goes in writing.
Tell us what you need and get it back in 24 hours
You do not need to have everything decided. With these four things we send a real quote, not a brochure:
- Dates (or the month) and how many nights.
- How many people. Here it is billed per unit: the house, the boat and the van cost the same for 8 as for 16, so the headcount changes the per-person price a lot.
- What is non-negotiable for the group: the island day on a private boat, a chef in the house, a table at a club.
- Where you fly from and whether everyone lands the same day.
Within 24 hours you get a per-unit breakdown of what is included and what is not, and the payment calendar: a deposit to hold the house and the balance before the trip, against a company invoice. No agency fee and no commitment: the quote is a draft open to changes, and nothing is booked until you confirm.
